Introduction
The Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning Program provides advanced study of cities and regions and the systems and processes that produce places and sustain communities.
 
The PhD program combines intensive seminars with individualized programs of study. A small number of PhD students are accepted each year, and most have a graduate degree in city and regional planning or a related discipline. All admitted students receive a four-year funding through a combination of fellowships, research and teaching assistantships.
 
The PhD program enrolls about 20 students in residence who work closely with faculty on delivering the BSCRP and MCRP programs and on research projects. The program prepares doctoral students to conduct independent and original planning research and trains them in the pedagogical approaches to teaching city and regional planning.
 
Curriculum
Because of the nature of independent research, the PhD program curriculum is very flexible. The curriculum allows students to develop a research program through their academic interests and in concert with their advisor.
