WebsiteThe Master of Science in Sustainable Urban Management (MSSUM) is an accelerated graduate program that addresses the global challenges of sustainable development. Designed to be completed in one-year, the degree provides urban professionals working in a variety of fields with the knowledge and skills essential for understanding the multiplicity of inter-related urban systems and crafting the necessary policy interventions that facilitate the creation of sustainable, healthy, safe, and resilient communities.
With urban populations booming we need leaders, professionals, and policymakers who have a deep understanding of the complex relationships between urbanization and sustainable development.
Students will learn about the analytical and strategic skills essential for professionals who manage change in urban areas. Students will also gain skills for balancing the needs of economic development, environment protection and social inclusion in the evolving 21st-century city.
Mid-career professionals from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds are welcome to apply.

The program is housed within the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. The University of Illinois has a long and rich history in the training of professionals working on urban and regional policy issues, dating back to 1913. At that time, only the University of Illinois and Harvard University offered courses in urban planning.
