Benbrook, Texas: Building a Safe and Supportive Community With Affordable Housing

HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

In Benbrook, Texas, developer OM Housing worked closely with the community to construct the Boston Heights Apartments, a 144-unit affordable and market-rate multifamily rental property. Before the development of Boston Heights, the project site was home to frequent unsafe or illegal activity — a significant concern for area residents. OM Housing also addressed neighbors’ concerns about constructing multifamily housing in a community of single-family homes, despite the site having long been zoned to accommodate multifamily development. The project’s environmental features, community safety improvements, and onsite services helped Boston Heights earn a 2021 Vanguard Award from the National Affordable Housing Management Association.
