During its 2021 Housing Opportunity Conference, the Urban Land Institute held a virtual panel discussion on using private capital to purchase, renovate, and preserve affordable housing across the country. The panelists described the varying approaches of their respective companies, the investors that each attracts, and the varied market segment that each serves.
In Practice: The Atlantis Apartments Provide Affordable, Accessible Units for Residents With Disabilities in Denver, Colorado
Opened in September 2020, the Atlantis Apartments is a $23 million, 60-unit development for residents with disabilities in the Baker neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. The four-story building offers accessible and adaptable units affordable to low-, very low-, and extremely low-income households, with onsite supportive services designed to allow independent living. The development is the first of two phases, with the second, an 84-unit building for those transitioning out of chronic homelessness, planned for an adjacent lot.
In the Trending article, Aaron Shroyer, William Snow, and Richard Cho discuss resources in the American Rescue Plan (ARP) to help reduce the nation’s homelessness rates. With an estimated 463,000 unique households experiencing homelessness in 2020, the problem of homelessness is severe. ARP allocates $5 billion through the HOME Investment Partnerships program alone, and over $10 billion total. The authors estimate that ARP funds could help transition more than 200,000 households experiencing homelessness into permanent housing over the course of the next few years.
