Message from PD&R Leadership: APPAM Conference Highlights Data Tools
In the leadership message, PD&R’s associate deputy assistant secretary for research, evaluation, and monitoring Mark Shroder discusses data tools featured in presentations at the 2019 Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management Fall Research Conference. Shroder examines the utility of four tools and techniques: policy mapping, randomized messaging experiments, infrastructure visualization, and the National Equity Research Database.
Featured: Center for Community Progress Reports on Trends in Creative Placemaking
In November 2019, the Center for Community Progress hosted a webinar to discuss the findings of a new report titled “Trends in Creative Placemaking on Problem Properties: 2019 National Survey Findings.” The survey examines the use of creative placemaking in returning vacant properties to productive use. During the webinar, presenters shared the survey findings and outcomes and described a case study of creative placemaking in Memphis.
In Practice: Arts-Based Programming Supports Aging in Place
Opened in 2017, the Olivera Senior Apartments provide 84 units of affordable housing to seniors aged 62 and older in Pomona, California. After a 2013 housing needs assessment indicated growth in the area’s senior population, developer Integrity Housing undertook the $19 million project at a vacant site in an existing residential neighborhood, and partnered with the arts nonprofit EngAGE to provide activities that help residents combat social isolation.
Trending: Changes in the National Housing Market: Indicators as of January 2020
In the trending article, PD&R senior economist Carolyn Lynch answers questions about the most recent Housing Market Indicators report. The report, published in January 2020, highlights key statistics and trends to characterize the health of the nation’s housing market. Lynch explains the rationale behind certain presentation and analysis decisions in the report, and answers questions about its findings. Among other topics, Lynch explains the fourth-quarter rise in the national rate of homeownership.
