According to an announcement by Virginia Tech yesterday, their plans to build a $1 billion innovation campus in nearby Alexandria helped win the HQ2 prize for Northern Virginia.
"Amazon listed Virginia Tech’s $1 billion investment to build an 'innovation campus' in Alexandria as a major factor in its decision to bring half of its second headquarters to Northern Virginia," reports Zeke Hartner.
"According to the university, the new million-square-foot campus is designed to draw in graduate and undergraduate students for computer science, computer engineering, software engineering and related studies — exactly the kinds of talent pools that Amazon has been looking for to staff its new headquarters," adds Hartner.
The new campus will be built in a part of Alexandria known as Oakville Triangle, which is just a few miles away from the planned Crystal City location (now called National Landing) of Amazon's HQ2.
